Synopsis

Based on her autobiographical novel, Marjane Satrapi wrote and directed this animated feature about a young Iranian girl who comes of age during the Islamic Revolution. When precocious Marji is sent to an Austrian boarding school, she learns that her ethnicity is a spark for racial prejudice. Then, as an adult, the tyrannical pressures of Iranian society force Marji to once again leave home as she sets out for France in hopes of finally defining her cultural identity during a time of repressed equality and freedom.
